How We Cut Guitar Backs & Sides

products: We produce a full range of standard and nonstandard sizes: classical, OM, dreadnought, jumbo, etc. Please note that we cut our own logs into guitar sets, and therefore have complete control during all stages. So please enquire about:

quarter-sawn: We strive for radially sawn (100% quarter-sawn), book matched sides and backs. However, hardwood logs are problematic for actually achieving perfect quarter-sawing across the entirely board (due to heart-check in particular, but also due to small log sizes). Consequently, while we are proud to offer rosewood guitar sets that far exceed current standards for a high quality jungle rosewood, many backs will be somewhat off-quarter towards the outer edges of the lower bout.

When you examine our sets, our descriptions may state something like "20% flat-sawn." This means that one-fifth (20%) of the lower bout will show some characteristics of not being quarter-sawn. Unless that number exceeds 20%, you will hardly notice the effect in the appearance of the back of your guitar.

Of course, for many luthiers, this is not an issue anyway. Plus, as we stated, we generally far exceed the quality of the other jungle rosewood you will find available for sale!

dimensions: Sides are typically a minimum of 34 inches long, 5 inches wide and sufficiently thick to achieve no less than 3 mm when fully sanded. (For smaller guitars, the width may be reduced to 4.5 inches.) Let us know if you have special requirements.

Backs are as shown in the photos, sufficiently thick to achieve no less than 4 mm when fully sanded. You will probably want to sand, scrape or carve to 3 mm or less. This is strong wood.

matching: Many sets (backs and sides) are matched from the same log. This is not true in all cases, but we always strive for a good match. If you are unhappy, we will accept the returned wood and/or will happily try for a rematch.

finishing: Air dried (below 11%), and end-sealed. (We use wood glue, not wax.) We do not necessarily sand all pieces, and when we do it is usually only one surface.

important safety concerns: Sanding orsawing of this very hard wood will usually produce very fine dust. Because all rosewoods contain sensitizing chemicals, we strongly recommend thatyou follow safety practices, particularly avoiding breathing the dust. Although bariensis seems to have little of the widely reported allergic reactions associated with cocobolo, we cannot warrant this or conclude that it is safe for use by all individuals.
